FEATURE
Polytechnic ITB which is located in Bandung - Indonesia and was established since 1985 is a public polytechnic education institution in a professional scheme. This education program highlights the practical application in the industry, so the graduates will be expertise in their own fields. The education mission in general is to support the industrial development in Indonesia, both in new industrial development or in the present industrial quality improvement through human resources generation to anticipate the technology development and having the matching ability in the special needs in the industry.
Department of Refrigeration and Airconditioning is one of the engineering departments at Polytechnic ITB which was established in 1987. At present ( 1997 ), this Department is the only one department in Indonesia which concentrate in the field of refrigeration and airconditioning for D3 program. Those fields are related to a number of other disciplines / streams such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architecture and civil engineering, food technology and hygiene, chemical engineering and engineering science. As the technology in all these streams develop steadily, the tasks change and become more. Refrigeration system are not only used for food preservation and transportation ( trucks, container, ships, aircrafts etc ), special material or chemical storage but also used in many industries such as chemical industries, pharmaceutical industries, cement industries, oil industries, industries etc. And airconditioning systems are not only used for human comfort as in hotels, offices, convention/concert halls but are used also in the industries such as sterille chemical processes, michrochip industries, transportations ( cars, buses, ships, aircrafts ). In the hospital cooling systems are needed for special operation rooms and blood preservation. After completing their studies, the D3 graduates are able to fulfill the following jobs : assist in construction and design; plan, calculate and design refrigeration and airconditioning systems with given components; coordinate and supervise the installation of systems; supervise maintenance and repair; adapt and modify systems to new technologies under the aspect of preventing energy waste; work as supervisor in production; operate large systems in industries; work as middle level manager ( first fine function ) in the industry and as manager in small business.

CURRICULUM
The curriculum development is based on orientation concept / academic based of 55 % and orientation system / industrial based of 45 %. So the curriculum is an integral of theoritical and practice. Having 6 semesters, 38 hours per week, the total study time is distributed in four main parts, ie. general subjects, basic engineering subjects, applied engineering subjects and practical activities.

Department of Refrigeration and Airconditioning, Polytechnic ITB, with its two specializations has the following facilities : Basic mechanic workshop, Refrigeration and airconditioning workshop, Basic refrigeration lab., Applied refrigeration lab., Airconditioning lab., Instrumentation lab., Department library.
